The Call for Justice in the UN Global Plan 2021–2030

The UN Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030 calls on countries worldwide to deliver a fair and effective judicial response for victims of road traffic collisions and their families. In alignment with this call, the International Road Victims’ Partnership (IRVP) has published a detailed report outlining what a meaningful justice process should look like.

Ensuring Justice & Support for Road Crash Victims

This document highlights the urgent need for transparent and thorough investigations into road traffic collisions. It emphasizes that investigations must be carried out openly and with integrity, leaving no detail unchecked and ensuring accountability at every step. It also stresses the importance of timely prosecutions, as delays can deepen the trauma for victims and their families.

To provide real support, accessible legal assistance must be available to help victims confidently navigate the legal system. Just as crucial is treating victims with respect and compassion throughout the proceedings, safeguarding their dignity even in challenging situations.

Understanding the Criminal Justice (Victims of Crime) Act

The Criminal Justice (Victims of Crime) Act 2017 sets out the rights of victims in Ireland, ensuring they are treated with dignity, receive clear information, and are supported throughout the legal process. This important legislation protects all victims of crime, including those affected by serious road traffic offences, and helps ensure their voices are heard.

How the Criminal Justice System Works in Ireland

Understanding the criminal justice system helps victims and families feel informed and supported. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) outlines how crimes are investigated, prosecuted, and brought before the courts in Ireland. This resource explains each stage, from reporting a crime to sentencing.

Reviewing Victim Compensation in Ireland

The Law Reform Commission’s Consultation Paper “Compensating Victims of Crime” explores how Ireland’s compensation system could better support victims and their families. This report invites discussion on improving the financial support available to those affected by crime, including victims of serious road traffic offences.

The Irish Road Victims Association welcomes efforts to review and improve the compensation process for victims of crime. Fair and timely compensation is an essential part of supporting victims and recognising the harm they have suffered. We continue to advocate for a system that is accessible, transparent, and responsive to the needs of road crash victims and their families.

Support and Guidance for Victims & Families

Our victim guide provides essential information for anyone affected by road traffic collisions, especially those grieving the loss of a loved one or coping with serious injury. Developed by victims in collaboration with road safety partners, it aims to fill a long-standing gap in support and help families understand and engage with the legal processes that follow such a tragedy. Please note this is a draft version, and we strongly recommend seeking independent legal advice if you have been impacted.

As a national organisation, IRVA offers free information, emotional support, and practical assistance to victims and their families. If you have been affected, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to help you through every step of this difficult journey.
